Donations

Overview

Silo offers free donation support services to help you seamlessly give back to your community and take advantage of profit-boosting tax benefits. Services include:

  • Produce donation handling
  • Updates on federal & state laws that impact your business
  • Documentation needed to help you save money via potential tax credits or deductions

Benefits

Increase your profit margins: Donating product may be more valuable to your business than selling it below market value. In some cases, you may be able to receive a tax deduction of twice the purchase cost of the produce donated!

  • Federal tax deductions
    • Reduce your taxable income via food donations under the federal tax deduction guidelines.
    • While donations normally only allow for deductions of up to 10% of business income, qualified donations (food products) to nonprofits Silo works with allow for an additional 5% deduction.
  • State tax deductions
    • Depending on the state your business operates in, you may qualify for additional State Tax Incentives of up to 55%.

Ensure legal compliance: Some states have passed laws requiring wholesale food vendors to donate or compost edible food to food recovery agencies rather than dumping. Managing your donations with Silo lets you be ready for these requirements.

Help your community: Donated produce feeds those in need in your local community, rather than potentially ending up in the dumpster. This is something to celebrate! Studies show that consumers prefer to buy from businesses that care about their community.

How It Works

  1. When you find yourself with product you're prepared to dump or sell for pennies on the dollar, consider donating it instead!
  2. Visit this page and enter some information:
    • What produce you wish to donate (commodity, pack style, amount)
    • A representative photo of the produce
    • Where the produce is currently and if you need help transporting it to the donation location.
  3. Silo reviews the submission and connect you with a local non-profit in need.
  4. Silo provides you a drop-off location or arrange for a pick up.
  5. Silo provides you with donation receipts and assistance in all the documentation you’ll need to provide to your tax preparer to apply for tax credits.
